A total of 110 individuals with type 1 diabetes were randomly selected from Uludag University Hospital, Bursa, Turkey. The sample power was found to be 92%. The data collection tools were an Information Form for Diabetes Patients and a Nutritional Habits Form. The study data were analyzed with descriptive, Pearson correlation and multiple regression statistics. Results: The study results illustrated a statistically significant relation between the HbA1c levels and nutritional habits of diabetes patients (r = -.88) and further suggested that 72% of changes in HbA1c levels may result from patients' nutritional habits (R2:.72, p=.000).Conclusion: Diabetes patients can better manage a nutritional therapy and control HbA1c levels when their nutritional habits have been identified in detail. Nutritional habits are proven to be influential in maintaining glycemic control, which consequently emphasizes the significance of the nutritional habits of patients with diabetes. In summary, this small-scale cross-sectional study indicates the potential role of nutritional habits in glycemic control.Item Clinical presentation of children in emergency department diagnosed as type-1 diabetes mellitus(Professional Medical Publications, 2014-08-05) Avdal, Elif Ünsal; Tokem, Yasemin; Korkmaz, Medet; Kırbıyıkoğlu, Fatma Iltus; Arkan, Burcu; Uludağ Üniversitesi/Sağlık Yüksekokulu/Hemşirelik Bölümü.; 26322343100Objectives: This retrospective study evaluates, the clinical and laboratory values of children with type 1 diabetes at the time of first admission to the emergency service. Methods: It is a retrospective study to examine the clinical Et laboratory findings of children visiting the emergency service between 2009 & 2012. The sample of the study included 111 children with newly diagnosed type 1 diabetes. Student t test and chi-square test were used in the analysis. Results: HbA1c and blood glucose levels and ketoacidosis frequency was found significantly changed (p < 0.05). It was detected that the frequency of ketoacidosis at the time of diagnosis was 60% in the children with type 1 diabetes while it was 45% in the second group and 34% in the third group. This difference at the time of admisison was found to be statistically significant (p < 0.05). Conclusion: It became possible to diagnose children with type 1 diabetes much earlier over the course of time, and the number of patients that could be treated before severe diabetic ketoacidosis developed increased. This results is of great importance as it will provide a guide for all medical professionals including nurses.Item The effect of self-directed learning abilities of student nurses on success in Turkey(Churchill Livingstone, 2013-08) Avdal, Elif Ünsal; Uludağ Üniversitesi/Sağlık Bilimleri Fakültesi/Hemşirelik Bölümü.; ABE-9593-2021; 37010254200SDL-self-directed learning is a learning method used increasingly in adult education. This study was carried out as an instructive effort to examine the effects of SDL on the success of students from nursing school. The sample of this study was composed of 220 students attending in Nursing School of Dokuz Eyul University during the fall semester of 2006. SDL scale including 40 questions was used to obtain the data. Kocaman et al. verified and validated the reliability of scale in Turkey. The data was evaluated by using Pearson correlation analysis. As a result of research, a positive meaningful average relation was found between the points of SDL and success of the students. (p<0.01, r: .60).Item The effects of web-based diabetes education on diabetes care results: A randomized control study(Lippincott Williams & Wilkins, 2011-02) Kızılcı, Sevgi; Demirel, Neslihan; Avdal, Elif Ünsal; Uludağ Üniversitesi/Sağlık Bilimleri Fakültesi/İç Hastalıkları Hemşireliği Anabilim Dalı.; ABE-9593-2021; 37010254200This study aimed to test the effects of providing Web-based diabetes education to individuals with type 2 diabetes on the A(1c) level and health check attendance. The study participants comprised 122 individuals with type 2 diabetes, who had access to the Internet, had completed their basic diabetes education, and had similar basic situational factors. Using a randomization method, these participants were chosen from the patients being monitored by the diabetes nurses. The experimental group (n = 61) was monitored via the Web. From measurements recorded in the sixth month of monitoring, we found that A1c levels of the individuals with diabetes who were monitored through the Web decreased (t = 6.63; P G.05), and the rate of attending health check visits increased (z= 5.97; P <.05), while no difference was detected in the control group (t = -0.63; P =.534; z = -0.80; P =.426). To maintain glycemic control, Web use could be adopted as a complementary tool for monitoring individuals with diabetes.Item The effects of web-based diabetes education on diabetes care results: A randomized control study(Lippincott Williams & Wilkins, 2011-02) Kızılcı, Sevgi; Demirel, Neslihan; Avdal, Elif Ünsal; Uludağ Üniversitesi/Sağlık Yüksekokulu/İç Hastalıkları Hemşireliği Anabilim Dalı.; 37010254200This study aimed to test the effects of providing Web-based diabetes education to individuals with type 2 diabetes on the A(1c) level and health check attendance. Item Validity and reliability of the diabetes family support and conflict scale in Turkish(Carbone Editore, 2016-11-02) Sofulu, Funda; Avdal, Elif Ünsal; Arkan, Burcu; Uludağ Üniversitesi/Sağlık Yüksekokulu/Psikiyatri Hemşireliği Anabilim Dalı.; 57193346604Objectives: This research was achieved methodologically for testing if "The Diabetes Family Support and Conflict Scale" is a reliable and validated instrument for the Turkish society.
