Publication A review of the Cape Gelidonya and Uluburun Shipwrecks shed light on Cyprus maritime activities(2024-03) Günel, İlknur; GÜNEL, İLKNUR; Fen Edebiyat Fakültesi; Tarih Bölümü; 0000-0002-8815-4818Cyprus had an important place in the ancient Mediterranean trade thanks to its geostrategic location. The island, drew attention with its copper resources and ceramic products in the Bronze Age. Archaeological remains unearthed in Uluburun and Cape Gelidonya shipwrecks support this situation. The cargo of shipwrecks and the route they followed show both the extent of maritime trade during this period and Cyprus’ position in these commercial activities. The high ratio of Cypriot copper and ceramics to the total amount of goods in the shipwrecks is instructive in terms of understanding the role of Cyprus in the maritime activities. The hypothesis of their potential Cypriot origin is supported by the higher quantity of Cypriot-origin products found on these wrecks compared to others. The fact that Cyprus is an important port on the route followed by merchantships and even the view that it could be the initial departure point of them, makes it worth to consider. Accordingly, in this study, the Cape Gelidonya and Uluburun shipwrecks, and the Cypriot goods they contain are examined, and the active role of Cyprus in the maritime trade ofItem Analysis of urban poverty by cultural factors: an overview on Bursa case(Uludağ Üniversitesi, 2007-12-01) Bıçkı, Doğan; İktisadi ve İdari Bilimler FakültesiBu yazıda kentsel yoksulluk sorunun kültürel/moral nedenlerine dikkat çekilmektedir. Item Aristotle and Avicenna (İbn Sina) in terms of the theory of intellects(Uludağ Üniversitesi, 2006-06-01) Kabadayı, TalipIn this paper, I aim to illustrate the theory or the understanding of intellects, which Aristotle and Avicenna (Ibn Sina) spelled out in their works, and to compare Aristotles’ opinions akin to the intellects with those of Avicenna so that I can set forth how Islamic thinkers were influenced by Aristotle in terms of their theory or the understanding of intellects among the some other things. In order to do so, first I am going to analyze Aristotle’s book called De Anima so as to explain his point of view about intellects. Secondly I will shed light to Avicenna’s ideas regarding with intellects by examining his book called Psychology of Avicenna. Finally, I am going to try to display the similarities and the differences between Aristotle’s ideas about the intellects and Avicenna’s thoughts akin to the intellects.Item Aristotle and the problem of time(Uludağ Üniversitesi, 2005-06-01) Kabadayı, TalipIn this paper, I aim to explain the nature of time and of the now in Aristotle as much as possible so that I can set forth the problem of what the relation between time and the now is. In his Physics in book IV, Chapter 10, Aristotle illustrates his version of time. At first sight, Aristotle examines that time exists and what it is and in how many senses we speak of the now and what sometime, lately, presently or just, long ago, suddenly and so on mean. In order to disclose the nature of time and the importance of the now in terms of Aristotle, first I am going to try to summarize what Aristotle says about time, and then I will look into the concept of the now since it strikes me that time is centered on it in Aristotle’s version of time.Item Asylum seekers and refugees in Bulgaria: Between opened and closed doors(Uludağ Üniversitesi, 2017-07-31) Erolova, YelisSince 2011, the increasing immigrant inflow from the Middle East to the European Union has led to the implementation of the Bulgarian policy towards asylum and refugees in a specific way. Bulgaria is a border state of the European Union where the people from the conflict regions can find security and their rights to be protected. The article draws attention to the capacity of the state institutions and readiness of society to host asylum seekers/refugees and develops questions on possibilities of their reception and integration examined by different interdisciplinary techniques of ethnographic research. The results of the survey show that asylum seekers/refugees find themselves in a contradictory situation between the Bulgaria’s asylum policy under a number of international instruments and national legislation, and the government decisions, the anti-refugee propaganda and the negative public attitudes. This controversial situation strengthens the country’s transit position in the migration corridor to other European countries. Item Byzantine-Ottoman relations in early 1420’s(Uludağ Üniversitesi, 2013-07-31) Kılıç, Şahin; Fen Edebiyat FakültesiUntil up to the Ottoman defeat in 1402 at the Battle of Ankara, the course of the relationships between the Byzantium and Ottoman Empire was defined by the expansionist policies of Ottomans against the Byzantium. During the reign of Beyazıd I, the attempts for transforming the Ottoman state into a centralized empire covering the Balkans had to be postponed until to the reign of Murad II. The policies pursued after the Interregnum period had also important impacts on the ways of relationships between Byzantium who was now confined within the city walls of İstanbul and Ottomans who were trying to recover. The early 1420’s was the beginning of a new era for the Byzantines. Emperor Manuel Palaiologos II who had managed to keep the state alive through his rational politics which gave direction to the Ottoman-Byzantine relations for three decades died in 1425 after a long period of illness. Ottoman Empire also entered a new period with the ascension of Murat II to the throne in 1422. Therefore, it can be said that the first years of the 1420’s was a turning point for both Ottomans and Byzantine Empire and the ways of their relationships. This article examines these changing relationships between the Byzantine and Ottoman Empire and the new balance of politics emerged after the Battle of Ankara primarily based on the contemporary sources of this period.Item The challenging facets of EFL learners’ writing performance(Uludağ Üniversitesi, 2018-01-31) Zidane, RahmounaWriting constitutes an important skill that has to be acquired by learners of English as a foreign language (EFL) to be able to express themselves in a written form within different contexts including academic studies and realistic situations. It requires the manipulation of a set of linguistic and cognitive sub-skills that determine the quality of the written product. The mastery of these features is reflected in the level of the learners’ writing performance. Therefore, this article attempts to highlight the interrelationships between the distinct writing traits and their role in increasing or hindering the students’ achievement through the study of the case of third year EFL learners at Tlemcen University using tests and interviews as research instruments. The analysis of the collected data has led to the conclusion that the students’ writing difficulties are mainly related to the issues of fluency and style.Item City as the resource of philosophy(Uludağ Üniversitesi, 2017-01-31) Yılmaz, Muhsin; Fen Edebiyat Fakültesi; Felsefe BölümüThe relation between the concepts of philosophy and the city in the sense of the resource of philosophy is discussed and clarified. Why the philosophical manner of thinking which defined as “the causes of the creation or generation in the natural world should be searched in the frontier of natural world and the autonomous reason of man should be the only and adequate means” by Guthrie comes out form Ancient Greek instead of Ancient Egypt or other cultural realms? Agora which makes it possible to dispute in objectifying manner besides keeps also to think philosophically is an agent differs Ancient Greek form other similar cultures. One could talk in this sense about a parallelism between the philosophical manner of thinking and Ancient Greek’s way of life, i.e. Agora.Item A comparison of social networks: Native and immigrant women of İnegöl(Uludağ Üniversitesi, 2012-01-06) Zafer, Ayşenur Bilge; Fen Edebiyat Fakültesi; Tarih Bölümüİnegöl country of Bursa city has been a settling area where substantial amount of different immigrant groups have settled. Ozan; Fen Edebiyat Fakültesi; Sosyoloji BölümüIn this study, I examine the journal Sebilür-reşad to understand how nationalism was coupled with Turkish Islamic thought in the journalistic discourse between the years 1908 and 1924. For this study, I analyzed thirty articles published in Ottoman Turkish in the journal between those years. The mainstream idea of the journal during this period was to stress a perceived conflict between the Muslim world and western powers and to advocate the idea of the unity of Muslims against the colonialist activities of western powers in the region. The idea of this unity, however, seems to be articulated in different and even contesting nationalist terms. Therefore, my intention here is to demonstrate how Islamic discourse was mediated by journalistic activity with reference to varying nationalist approaches (Turkish, Ottomanism and territorial nationalism) and their ‘others’ under changing political circumstances.Item The contribution of an important verdict of Turkish Council of state to the system of law in evaluating civil servants(Uludağ Üniversitesi, 2006-12-01) Derdiman, R. Having been encultured into the norms of Victorian period and the early twentieth century, Virginia is overwhelmed by an initial sense of estrangement in the modern, multicultural world, whose façade has been shaped by advanced scientific and technological developments and the changes in traditional socio-economic and cultural relationships. When Virginia decides to be deculturated from Victorian culture, she starts to adjust herself to the new world, in which she has a chance to develop herself in a more liberated woman. This study refers to theories on culture shock and cross-cultural adaptation to show that Gee’s Virginia, who moves from the early twentieth-century society dominated by conservative Victorian norms, achieves crosscultural adaptation into a foreign community by adjusting herself to the rules and values of the global and multicultural twenty-first century world.Item Debate on word system-modern word systems in the context of Andre Gunder Frank and Immanuel Wallerstein(Uludağ Üniversitesi, 2017-07-31) Yeniçırak, Hasan; Fen Edebiyat Fakültesi; Sosyoloji BölümüThis study is an assessment on over modern system and world system one in terms of Andre Gunder Frank and Immanuel Wallerstein. There are two sides of this study. On the one hand are Andre Gunder Frank and his supporters such as ChaseDunn and Wilkinson. On the other hand of the dispute Immanuel Wallerstein and his followers such as Immanuel Wallerstein, Giovanni Arrighi, Fernand Braudel, Samir Amin and Janet Abu-Lughod. Frank and his supporters advocate word system; however Wallerstein and his followers is adherent of Modern World System. In the Wallerstein’s perspective, modern world system, in other words capitalist modern world system, is last and unique systems to be found in the sixteenth century. However, according to Frank, it is possible to find the characteristics peculiar to modern world system such as endless accumulation of capital, center-periphery (coreperiphery) relation and hegemony process also earlier before the sixteenth century.Item The defense of externalism about reasons from a new perspective(Uludağ Üniversitesi, 2004-06-01) Doğan, AyselSome philosophers contend that people who accept certain moral judgments act in accordance with these judgments, and that it is odd for people to accept certain moral judgments and yet to be entirely indifferent as to acting on these judgments. According to these philosophers, moral considerations people hold motivate them to act in certain ways. Nevertheless, it seems possible for people to be indifferent to moral judgments they believe while acting. This is the main focus of the objection externalists raised against internalist claims just mentioned. I think that externalists are on the right track in criticizing the internalist contention that the connection between holding a moral belief and motivation to act is necessary. Accepting a moral principle may not have any corresponding motivation to act on the relevant principle. The arguments brought against internalism within the traditional reason/passion framework are not, however, strong enough to defeat it conclusively. Instead of the dualistic framework, I propose a new perspective based on a triadic division of soul, and the idea of autonomy of will, which I believe, help us definitely condemn internalism.Item Design of a robotic toy and user interfaces for autism spectrum disorder risk assessment(Bursa Uludağ Üniversitesi, 2019-01-31) Uncular, Deniz; Artut, SelçukAutism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is an umbrella term for a spectrum of complex developmental disorders resulting in deficits in social communication and repetitive and stereotyped behaviors (APA 2013). Research in the area revealed that young children with ASD are interested in technology. This preference for technology may lead to promising intervention models (Annaz et al. 2012; Klin et al. 2009; Fong et al. 2003). This paper includes research into how to design and use technology to create suitable products for deficits of ASD. With all the concern over the high prevalence ratios of ASD, this study presents the methodology and design of a risk assessment device, which aims to capture the interest of children with ASD aged 3-4, and direct children who score low on the tests towards a diagnosis. The tests in the device are designed to detect differences with ToM tests between ASD and typically developing (TD) children. In the scope of the paper, 2D illustrations, interface design, and outer shell design of the device are created in compliance with the research data in the field.
