Abstract
In this study, 50 female Kıvırcık sheep, 2-3 years of age, at the Marmara Hayvancılık Araştırma Enstitüsü were used. Variations occurred in serunı retinol values of these sheep depending on season and kind of consumed feeds were investigated. The animals were only grassed on pasture between May and October, and they were fed on hay and compound feed between November and February, and then they were fed on compound feed and pasture in March and April. Blood samples were taken from sheep month/y during one year. At the same time, samples were collected from pasture grassed and feeds consumed by these sheep. ß- carotene values were determined from pasture grass and compound feed. The serum retinol values were determined from the blood samples. The ß-carotene values of pasture grasses were between 27 μg/g and 58 μg/g during one year. The serum retinol values of sheep were higher in the winter and the spring seasons than the others (P<0.001). As a result, it was expected that good quality hay or vitamin A supplementation are profitable in the seasons that the serum retinol levels of sheep are low.
