    Technical efficiency of cotton farms and its determinants: Application of stochastic frontier analysis

    Efficient use of scarce resources is an important issue for countries and sectors. This study uses farm level data to investigate the technical efficiency and its determinants for a sample of 80 cotton farms using the translog stochastic frontier analysis. The mean technical efficiency of the farms was found to be 86.8% indicating that about 13.2% of output level is lost to technical inefficiency. This implies that a potential exists to increase cotton production through improved efficiency in the research area. Technical inefficiency was modelled as a function of farm specific variables. The main determinants of technical efficiency include farmer's age, farm size, farmer's experience and non-farm income. The variables of farm size and farmer's experince negatively affected technical inefficiency. As farm size and farmers' experience increased technical inefficency decreased. However, farmer's age and non-farm income showed positive relationship with inefficiency. In the light of these findings, new agricultural policies should be designed to increase technical efficiency of cotton farms. Agricultural policies that will be implemented to improve the technical efficiency of cotton farms will also create an opportunity to increase the profitability and sustainability of the farms.

    The forecast of corn production fields in turkey with arima model

    Corn has an important place in animal nutrition in addition to its importance in human nutrition in Turkey. Correct agricultural policies and strategies should be developed to increase corn production, which is a very important agricultural product in both human nutrition and animal husbandry. In this context, considering the corn cultivation areas of 1970-2019, predicting future corn cultivation areas is very important in terms of developing correct policies and planning production. This study aims to predict the cultivation areas of corn in the years 2020- 2030 as a product that has not been analyzed using ARIMA models before. To accomplish this objective, data from a total of 50 years during the period 1970-2019 and the Autoregressive Integrated Moving Average (ARIMA) model were used to estimate the corn cultivation areas in Turkey.

    Importance of sustainable use of pesticides: The case of pear production in Bursa, Turkey

    This study aims to address importance sustainable pesticide use and its effect on the economic sustainability of farms. Excessive or improper pesticide use has negative effects not only on the environmental but also on the social and economic sustainability of farms. The adoption of Integrated Pest Management (IPM) by farmers is crucial for sustainable pesticide use. IPM provides the opportunity to reduce pesticide use, reducing costs for the farmer, as well as increasing on-farm and off-farm sustainability.This study was conducted to analyze the farm-level pesticide use in conventional pear growing areas in Bursa province of Turkey. Data were collected from 34 farms which grow mainly pear, using the purposive sampling method because of the lack of record-keeping.The results of this study reveal that the average usage of pesticides is 7,394 g/da as an active ingredient in pear production. It has been calculated that the over use of pesticides amounted to 22% of the average cost of pesticide per decare in pear production in Bursa province. The additional pesticide and labor cost associated with the use of pesticides more than the recommended dose was determined as 45.85 (sic)/da.Dissemination of IPM applications will create significant opportunities for sustainable agriculture due to the use of sustainable pesticides.

    For any nation's economic development, small & medium sized enterprises are considered as powerful engines. Although the number of agricultural enterprises within the family farming category is unknown, the nature of the economic, social, environmental and demographic problems that are faced by the enterprises of this nature and their regional repercussions stands out as important issues. In this study, the agricultural enterprise that uses family labour, completely or predominantly, is examined. Also, rural population and the ongoing trends in rural unemployment is researched. From this perspective, the tendency of family labour against the threats of rural disintegration is discussed.

    A study analysing the technical efficiency of oyster mushroom farms in kampala metropolitan area, Uganda

    The study was conducted in Kampala Metropolitan area Uganda in October 2016 and it focused on analyzing the technical efficiency of oyster mushroom farms referred to as Decision Making Units (DMUs) using input oriented Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA), analyzing the factors that determine the efficiency of mushroom farms using Tobit model and carrying out a strength weakness, opportunity and threat (SWOT) analysis of the mushroom industry in Uganda. 52 respondents were interviewed face to face through the use of questionnaires. The study indicates that 8 (15.38%) DMUs are technically efficient which means they operate at most productive scale size while 43 (82.7%) DMUs need to increase their scale to attain optimal production (scale efficiency), and 1 (1.92%) DMU need to decrease their scale in order to gain efficiency. Results from the Tobit model indicate that membership to any organization, the number of bags/gardens cultivated by farmers and the selling price of mushrooms per kilogram are the determinants of the efficiency of DMUs. The SWOT analysis indicates that the mushroom sector in Uganda has high returns on investment within a short period as strength, difficulties in identifying a good spawn breeder to produce high-quality mushroom spawn as weakness, high potential for both local and global markets & high possibilities of creating self-employment for different groups of people as opportunities and lack of adequate qualified advisory and extension personnel on how to grow mushrooms as threats among others. There is a need for inefficient DMUs to reduce the level of inputs in specified amounts in order for them to attain efficiency, address the bottlenecks of the mushroom sector and utilize the opportunities and strengths possessed by the sector to ensure that mushroom cultivation is more efficient, relevant and productive in order to generate more income to the farmers, increase the supply of food and ensuring improved quality of the environment.

    Food supplier selection in the catering industry using the analytic hierarchy process

    Choosing the right supplier is vital as it helps to achieve high-quality products at relatively lower costs on the one hand and increases profitability by increasing customer satisfaction on the other. Cost alone is not enough in the supplier selection process. Managers should also consider other criteria such as quality, reliability, crisis management, green product simultaneously. Supplier selection is a multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM) problem involving both qualitative and quantitative criteria. This study uses the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP), which is one of the MCDM methods. The aims of this study are to determine the most essential supplier selection criteria in the catering industry and to choose the most suitable supplier. A semi-structured questionnaire was used to identify the supplier selection criteria and conducted with 30 experts. Based on the identified criteria by the experts, six experienced supply chain managers from six different catering firms were invited to complete the pair-wise comparison survey. Finally, the supplier with the highest overall score, using the seven highest-ranked criteria, have been selected from the three alternatives. This study concludes that the most critical criterion is crisis management. Cost is relatively less critical criterion in the catering industry.

    All people have the right to physical, social and economic access to sufficient, safe and nutritious food that meets their dietary needs and food preferences for an active and healthy life. That means all people have to right being food secure. Unfortunately this is a reality that about 1/7 of the world population are hungry and undernourished and even the food secure nations and individuals have food safety and nutritional problems. The goal for countries is to secure sustained agricultural growth, reduce poverty, and improve food security. Consequently, the average per capita consumption of processed products has increased. Turkish, agro-industrial development is linked to the relative abundance of agricultural raw materials and low-cost labor. Note that, from the point of view of development strategy, one of the most important features of any industry is the degree to which it is able to generate demand for the products of other industries. This phenomenon is known as 'linkage'. An industry may encourage investment both in subsequent stages of production by 'forward linkage' and in earlier stages through 'backward linkage'. The most suitable industries are indeed those that make relatively intensive use of the abundant raw materials and unskilled labour, and have less emphasis on scarce capital and skilled labour. The purpose of this study is to examine the importance of agribusiness in the Turkish economy.
