This study uses farm level data to investigate the technical efficiency and its determinants for a sample of 80 cotton farms using the translog stochastic frontier analysis. The mean technical efficiency of the farms was found to be 86.8% indicating that about 13.2% of output level is lost to technical inefficiency. This implies that a potential exists to increase cotton production through improved efficiency in the research area. Technical inefficiency was modelled as a function of farm specific variables. The main determinants of technical efficiency include farmer's age, farm size, farmer's experience and non-farm income. The variables of farm size and farmer's experince negatively affected technical inefficiency. As farm size and farmers' experience increased technical inefficency decreased. However, farmer's age and non-farm income showed positive relationship with inefficiency. In the light of these findings, new agricultural policies should be designed to increase technical efficiency of cotton farms. Agricultural policies that will be implemented to improve the technical efficiency of cotton farms will also create an opportunity to increase the profitability and sustainability of the farms.Publication Why organic food? The amount of organic product per capita annual consumption in Turkey was determined to be 1.3 euros. The most important reasons why this value is lower than EU countries are; income levels of consumers, difficulties in accessing organic products, consumer reluctance and expensive organic food that is sold in Turkey In this study, demand-side of organic products is tried to be defined by investigating consumers' attitude, thoughts and behaviours. For this reason a survey has been conducted in Istanbul with 205 consumers about organic product consumption. Survey results have been analysed using statistical methods. In accordance with this aim, rates of the input and output and energy efficiency coefficients in production were calculated. The numeric data utilized in the study were collected by face to face questionnaires conducted with 90 people in the counties of Karacabey and Kemalpap of the province of Bursa where there is extensive tomato farming. Simple random sampling method was used in the selection of producers. The data of the questionnaire comprise the years 2011-2012. According to study result, diesel has the highest share with a share of 60.07%. The rate of electricity is 4.26% energy equivalent and the rate of water is 0.87%. The energy output/input rate in tomato production was computed to be 1.52.Publication Economic analysis and marketing margins of the peach market in Turkey(Kahramanmaraş Sütçü İmam Üniversitesi, 2021-01-01) Vural, Hasan; Çakan, Veli Anıl; VURAL, HASAN; ÇAKAN, VELİ ANIL; Ziraat Fakültesi; Tarım Ekonomisi Bölümü; AFB-8936-2022; AAG-9627-2021In the study, it is aimed to analyze the market of peaches, which is becoming more and more important with its features such as creating raw materials for the food industry, contributing to human health, being an energy source and fertilizer. Data set is based on data between 2003-2017 obtained from TUIK and TOB statistics. The data includes; producer and consumer prices, production, consumption, export, import, and input prices. In order to analyze the Turkey peach market, models related to supply and demand functions were estimated, marketing margin and chain index calculations were made. Regression estimation results show that fertilizer price has a negative relationship with the production and labor price has a positive relationship with the production. It has been determined that the factor that has a positive effect on demand is population. It has been calculated that according to real prices, the average marketing margin is 0.60 TL kg(-1), share of the producer in consumer's price is 53.92%. The share of producer in consumer's price, which was average 60.92% between 2008 and 2011, decreased to 48.28% by 2017. This is an indication that the producer receives a lower share of the market earnings every year. For the benefit of both producers and consumers, it is important to encourage farmers to establish foundations such as cooperatives, that can reduce the marketing margin and increase the profit of the producer.
