(Ankara Üniversitesi, 2016-01-01) Kocatürk, Meriç; Salcı, Hakan; İpek, Volkan; Çelimli, Nureddin; Yılmaz, Zeki; KOCATÜRK, MERİÇ; YILMAZ, ZEKİ; SALCI, HAKAN; İpek, Volkan; Çelimli, Nureddin; Veteriner Fakültesi; İç Hastalıkları Ana Bilim Dalı; 0000-0002-2849-1222; 0000-0001-5874-7797; 0000-0001-9836-0749; A-9637-2008; ABZ-7197-2022; V-5578-2017; T-4623-2019; JIX-0056-2023
In this study, signalement, presenting clinical signs, results of diagnostic investigations and therapeutic outcomes of 17 dogs with pericardial effusion (PE) were evaluated retrospectively. Common findings were exercise intolerance (70%), muffled heart sound (60%) and ascites (50%). ECG showed low voltage QRS (60%) and supraventricular tachycardia (40%). Radiological findings revealed enlarged and globoid cardiac silhouette in all dogs. PE was confirmed by echocardiographic examinations, which was due to intracardiac neoplasia (n=6) or non-neoplastic causes [dilated cardiomyopathy (n=5), right-sided heart failure (RSHF, n=2), and idiopathic (n=4)]. In dogs with RSHF, Doppler-derived pulmonary hypertension was also observed. Analysis of pericardial fluids that was collected by pericardiocentesis showed a hemorrhagic effusion in dogs with intracardiac neoplasia, and transudate in the rest. In 4 dogs with neoplastic PE, pericardiectomy and tumor resection were performed. Histopathological examinations revealed an aortic body adenoma (n=1), aortic body carcinoma (n=1), papillary mesothelioma (n=1) and malignant epitheloid mesothelioma (n=1). In 2 dogs, neoplastic PE could not be classified. Dogs were treated medically for heart failure and neoplasia, as well. Prognosis was better for the first 12 months in dogs with non-neoplastic PE. In conclusion, echocardiographic examination is the best means to diagnose PE. In practice, when added to physically examination findings echocardiography also provides solid information in determining prognosis of PE due to neoplasia versus non-neoplastic causes. Survival time may be extended by pericardiectomy in the case of neoplastic PE, as well.

Thromboelastographic evaluation of coagulation profile in dogs with subclinical and clinical ehrlichiosis
(Kafkas Univ, Veteriner Fakultesi Dergisi, 2023-07-17) Tanaka, Ryou; Ceron, Jose Joaquin; Kocatürk, Merit; Yılmaz, Zeki; YILMAZ, ZEKİ; Veteriner Fakültesi; İç Hastalıkları Ana Bilim Dalı. ; 0000-0001-9836-0749; 0000-0001-9948-6490; 0000-0002-8654-1793; A-9637-2008
Canine monocytic ehrlichiosis (CME), a vector-borne disease of worldwide distribution, causes coagulopathy in dogs. Thromboelastography-TEG measures the efficiency of coagulation. However, there is lack of knowledge about TEG evaluation in different stages of CME. Thus, this study aimed to evaluate the coagulation status and viscoelastic properties of blood using TEG parameters in dogs with naturally-occurring CME, and their potential to discriminate between subclinical and clinical forms of the disease. The relationship between TEG parameters and C-reactive protein (CRP) was also investigated. For these purposes, 29 E. canis-seropositive dogs were used (12 subclinical and 17 clinical forms), and 10 healthy dogs as controls. Kaolin-activated TEG was performed in all dogs. Platelets were lower (P<0.01), but CRP was higher (P<0.001) in clinical form than in subclinical form. TEG-reaction (R) and clot-formation times (K) decreased (P<0.01), whereas a-angle and coagulation index (CI) increased (P<0.01) in both forms of CME compared to controls. The magnitude of decreases in R- and K-times and increases in a-angle and CI were higher in dogs with subclinical form compared to clinical form. CRP was correlated negatively (P<0.05) with TEG-Ly30. In conclusion, among TEG parameters, R-time, K-time, a-angle, and CI values may be used to differentiate subclinical form of CME from clinical form. Hypercoagulability is especially frequent in dogs with subclinical CME and may be associated with systemic inflammation.

(Ankara Üniversitesi, 2015-01-01) Kocaturk-Ocal, Meric; Salcı, Hakan; Çetin, Melike; Karapınar, Tolga; Yılmaz, Zeki; KOCATÜRK, MERİÇ; SALCI, HAKAN; Çetin, Melike; YILMAZ, ZEKİ; Veteriner Fakültesi; Cerrahi Ana Bilim Dalı; 0000-0002-2849-1222; 0000-0001-9836-0749; A-9637-2008; V-5578-2017; T-4623-2019; AAB-1790-2022
A 20-month-old, female Belgian Malinois Dog was referred for evaluation on exercise intolerance. A high-grade machinery murmur, tachycardia, and cardiomegaly were observed. An aortopulmonary window was diagnosed by a color-Doppler echocardiography showing a turbulent blood flow shunting from the proximal part of ascendance aorta to the main pulmonary artery. This cardiac anomaly was corrected by surgery. Dog was treated by furosemide, pimobendan, and enalapril during post-operative 7 days. 1-year after the surgery, life quality of the patient was perfectly good. This is the first report of this rare congenital heart disease and its successful outcome of surgically correction in Belgian Malinois Dogs.

This case report presents the clinical diagnostic work-up and surgical approach via cardiopulmonary by-pass technique in 15 day-old, male, Simmental calf with multiple cardiac defects. Calf suffered from respiratory stress and poor growth. Cardiac auscultation revealed a loud pansystolic murmur with cardiac trill of both transthoracic area of the heart. Cardiomegaly and pulmonary artery bulge (x-ray) and atrial fibrillation were observed. Color Doppler transthoracic echocardiography revealed musculomembranous ventricular septal defect (VSD), atrial septal defect (ASD) and patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) with left to right shunt. Routine hematological and serum biochemistry profiles were non-specific. Calf underwent to lateral thoracotomy for surgical correction of multiple cardiac defects. During the cardiopulmonary by-pass, calf was dead due to hemodynamic imbalances and ventricular fibrillation. Necropsy confirmed the presence of multiple cardiac defects in this case.

Hybrid balloon dilation treatment for cor triatriatum dexter in a small breed puppy
(Korean Soc Veterinary Science, 2019-09-01) Uemura, Akiko; Yoshida, Tomohiko; Matsuura, Katsuhiro; Tanaka, Ryou; Yılmaz, Zeki; YILMAZ, ZEKİ; Veteriner Fakültesi; 0000-0001-9836-0749
The authors encountered a 4-month-old, female Shiba dog weighing 4.0 kg, who had been exhibiting abdominal distension and increasing ascites for 2 months. She was brought for further examination and treatment with the chief complaints of ascites and dyspnoea during sleep. The dog was diagnosed with ascites caused by cor triatriatum dexter based on the physical and imaging findings. Under general anaesthesia, she was treated with hybrid balloon dilation under transoesophageal echocardiography guidance. Her postoperative recovery was quite rapid and uneventful. This method appears to be a useful, new, and less-invasive treatment option for cor triatriatum dexter.

(Mdpi, 2021-08-07) Hamabe, Lina; Mandour, Ahmed S.; Shimada, Kazumi; Uemura, Akiko; Yılmaz, Zeki; Nagaoka, Kentaro; Tanaka, Ryou; YILMAZ, ZEKİ; Veteriner Fakültesi; İç Hastalıkları Ana Bilim Dalı; 0000-0001-9836-0749; A-9637-2008
Simple Summary Two-dimensional speckle-tracking echocardiography represents an advanced imaging technique that allows the analysis of global and regional myocardial function, cardiac rotation and synchronicity using deformation imaging. It has gained growing importance over the last decade, especially in human medicine as a method of evaluating myocardial function. This review aims to give an overview of the current understanding of this technique and its clinical applicability in the field of veterinary medicine with a focus on early detection of left ventricular dysfunction in dogs. Two-dimensional speckle-tracking echocardiography (2D-STE) is an advanced echocardiographic technique based on deformation imaging that allows comprehensive evaluation of the myocardial function. Clinical application of 2D-STE holds great potential for its ability to provide valuable information on both global and regional myocardial function and to quantify cardiac rotation and synchronicity, which are not readily possible with the conventional echocardiography. It has gained growing importance over the past decade, especially in human medicine, and its application includes assessment of myocardial function, detection of subclinical myocardial dysfunction and serving as a prognostic indicator. This review illustrates the fundamental concepts of deformation analysis and gives an overview of the current understanding and its clinical application of this technique in veterinary medicine, with a focus on early detection of left ventricular (LV) dysfunction in dogs.

Genetic heterogeneity of bovine viral diarrhoea virus (BVDV) isolates from Turkey: Identification of a new subgroup in BVDV-1
(Elsevier Science Bv, 2008-08-25) Yesilbağ, Kadir; Foerster, Christine; Bank-Wolf, Barbara; Yılmaz, Zeki; Alkan, Feray; Özkul, Aykut; Burgu, İbrahim; Rosales, Sibilina Cedillo; Thiel, Heinz-Juergen; Koenig, Matthias; YEŞİLBAĞ, KADİR; YILMAZ, ZEKİ; Veteriner Fakültesi; Mikrobiyoloji Ana Bilim Dalı; Viroloji Bilim Dalı; 0000-0001-9836-0749; A-9637-2008; ABE-7662-2020
Genetic heterogeneity of Turkish ruminant pestiviruses was investigated by phylogenetic analysis of complete N-pro encoding nucleotide sequences. A total of 30 virus isolates obtained from 15 provinces around the country between 1997 and 2005 were included in the phylogenetic analysis. Virus isolates mostly originated from cattle with one isolate from sheep. The bovine isolates all belonged to BVDV-1, the sheep isolate to BVDV-2. Fifteen isolates formed a new subgroup within BVDV-1, tentatively named BVDV-1l. The remaining bovine isolates were typed as BVDV-la (n = 4), BVDV-lb (n = 4), BVDV-ld (n = 3), BVDV-If (n = 2) andBVDV-1h(n = 1). The isolates allocated to BVDV-1l originated from various geographical regions indifferent years. There was no correlation between genetic grouping and locations where isolates were obtained. Viruses originating from one farm in most cases belonged to the same subgroup (n = 5). This study indicates that the newly detected subgroup BVDV-1l is predominant and widespread in Turkey. Moreover, an ovine virus isolate was identified as the first member of BVDV-2 reported in Turkey. A serological survey using samples from western Turkey indicated that BVDV-2 is also present in cattle. (C) 2008 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Serum proteomic analysis would aid in better understanding the pathophysiology of several diseases. The aim of this study was to identify the serum proteomes of dogs with anaplasmosis and Lyme disease using a pro-teomic approach. Diseases were diagnosed by a commercial rapid in-clinic ELISA. Borrelia antibodies were evaluated by IFAT. Four groups were designated: symptomatic dogs with anaplasmosis (n=5), dogs with Lyme disease (n=5), dual-positive dogs (n=5), and healthy control dogs (n=5). Serum samples were collected before treatment. Two-dimen-sional electrophoresis of pooled samples in each group were run in triplicate. Ten out of 57 differentially expressed spots between groups were evaluated for identification by mass spectrometry. Compared to those of controls, levels of vitamin D-binding protein (VDBP), glycoprotein-9 (GP9) and kininogen-1 (KGN-1) decreased, while haptoglobin (Hp) and immunoglobulin (Ig) heavy chain levels increased in dual infection group. Serum apolipoprotein-A1 (Apo-A1) levels decreased in dogs with anaplasmosis, Lyme disease and dual in-fections compared to those in control dogs. Serum clusterin levels decreased in dogs with anaplasmosis but were not differentially expressed in dogs with Lyme disease or dogs with dual infections compared to those in control dogs. Calpain-3 decreased in dogs with anaplasmosis and Lyme disease. This study showed that many protein levels might be changed in dogs with naturally acquired anaplasmosis and Lyme disease. Understanding the role of these proteins in different biological processes can provide information of interest for diagnostic and therapeutic approaches for these clinical conditions.
