Abstract
Despite the presence of many studies that had investigated the correlation between the strenuous exercise and oxidative stress, none of them apparently considered the effect of acute smoking to this relationship. Therefore, the effect of acute smoking prior to strenuous exercise on the oxidative stress has been investigated in the present study. Twenty healthy male subjects, aged 18-34 volunteered in the study. Subjects were divided into 3 groups, Group 1 : Non-smoking group (n=10), Group 2: Smoking group (n=10), Group 3; Acute smoking group (n=10) A standard aerobic exercise protocol was applied to each group and blood and urine samples were collected before and after the exercise. Pre-exercise lactic acid (LA) concentrations were significantly higher in the smoking group. LA concentrations have significantly increased after the exercise in all groups. Although, the malondyaldehyde (MDA) concentrations have increased in all groups, the correction of these results for hemoconcentration, revealed the presence of an increase only in Group 3, which have carried out the exercise protocol right after the acute smoking period. No statistically significant difference was observed between the smoking and non smoking groups in superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity. SOD activity has decreased in all groups after the exercise and it was not affected by acute smoking. There was no statistically significant difference between the smoking and non-smoking groups in the pre-exercise glutation peroxidase (GPx) activity. GPx activity has diminished only in Group 2 after the exercise. Acute smoking did not affect GPx activity. Additional investigations need to be done, in order to draw further conclusions on GPx activity. Resting ceruloplasmin (SER) concentrations were found to be significantly higher in smoking groups compared to non-smoking group. Exercise and acute smoking did not show any significant effect on SER levels.
