Publication Factors affecting colostrum quality and calf passive transfer levels in holstein cattle(Polska Akad Nauk, Inst Genetyki I Hodowli Zwierzat, 2019-01-01) Özlüer, Abdurrahman; Abdullahoğlu, Elif; Duru, Serdar; DURU, SERDAR; Filya, İsmail; FİLYA, İSMAİL; Veteriner Fakültesi; 0000-0001-5243-4458; I-9517-2017; AAH-2927-2021The aim of this study was to determine the quality of colostrum in Holstein cattle and factors affecting serum total protein and immunoglobulin levels of calves. In the study colostrum samples taken from 334 Holstein cows in the first milking and serum samples collected from 354 calves born to these cows were evaluated using a digital refractometer. The minimum, maximum, mean and standard error values were 14.4%, 40.6% and 27.9 +/- 0.2%, respectively, for the colostrum Brix and they were 19.7 mg/ml, 168.1 mg/ml and 95.9 +/- 1.4 m g/ml, respectively, for colostrum immunoglobulin. The same values were 3.9 g/dL, 10.9 g/dL and 6.5 +/- 0.1 g/dL, respectively, for the serum total protein and 2.2 mg/ml, 37.7 mg/ml and 13.6 +/- 0.3 mg/ml, respectively, for immunoglobulin. The share of the colostrum samples below Brix 22% was 8.2% and that of the samples with immunoglobulin levels below 50 mg/ml was 3%. The percentage share of calves with a scrum total protein level below 5.5 g/dL. was found to be 15%, while the percentage of the immunoglobulin levels below 10 mg/ml was found to be approximately 30%. Birth season, lactation number, birth type and body condition score were found to have significant effects on colostrum quality (P<0.05). The serum total protein and immunoglobulin levels of female calves born in spring-summer to cows in their 4th and successive lactation and consuming at least 3 L colostrum Brix 30% in the first feeding were higher than in the others. Colostrum quality of cows and serum characteristics of calves should be evaluated in dairy farms. This is especially important for farms where calf deaths are more prevalent. Because of varying absorption ability, it may be advisable to give Holstein calves 3 L colostrum including IgG with min. Fifty head weaned Kivircik lambs, half males and half females, were used in fattening period. After weaning, the growth and feed consumption of the male and the female lambs fattened for 56 days were recorded. Average daily weight gain differed significantly (P<0.01) between the males and the females (294.9 and 214.2 g, respectively). A total of 10 lambs (5 males and 5 females) were slaughtered and the left side of the carcasses was cut into five joints. Dressing percentage (hot/cold) based on full weight and empty body weight were lower (P<0.05) for the males than the female lambs. Sex had a significant effect on kidney-knob and channel fat weight, M. longissimus dorsi section area (MLDA) and liquid expelled (P<0.01). Sex primarily affected the quantity of all types of fat deposits. The male lambs had higher muscle, muscle/bone and muscle/total fat ratios than females.Publication Change of daily milk yield during estrous period in holstein cattle raised under Mediterranean climate(Springer, 2019-07-01) Duru, Serdar; Baycan, Süleyman Can; DURU, SERDAR; BAYCAN, SÜLEYMAN CAN; Ziraat Fakültesi; Zootekni Bölümü; 0000-0001-5243-4458; 0000-0002-4134-5641; AAG-8259-2021; I-9517-2017This study was conducted to determine the effect of estrus on the daily milk yield in Holstein cows and to investigate the chance of using the possible milk yield changes in determining the estrus. During the 3-year period of the study, 103 dairy cows were observed 4days before and 4days after daily milk yield of 240 estruses and a total of 2174 daily milk yields were evaluated. Variance analysis was used to determine the factors affecting the daily milk yield, and the LSD test was used for multiple comparisons. Insemination year, insemination season, number of lactation, milk yield group, and daily milk yield of lactation period were found to be significant (P<0.01). On the other hand, the effect of estrus days on milk yield was insignificant. In the days of estrus, the least square mean of milk yield is 31.0kg, while the lowest and highest milk yields are 10.2kg and 62.9kg. The daily milk yield in the estruses decreased by an average of 300g, which decreased to 400g by continuing 1day after the estruses. The next day, however, it increased rapidly by 600g, and then dropped again, probably due to the effect of metestrus. It was found that, among all estruses, 31.3% of cows decreased their milk yield, whereas 26.5% of cows increased their milk yield. However, 42.2% of cows both decreased and increased their milk yield in different estruses. The interval between birth and the first insemination after were found to be longer (97.5days and 92.9days) at high milk-yielding cows compared to the low milk-yielding cows. BCS was assessed 1 day after lambing, based on a scale of 1-5, by palpation of muscling and fat deposits over and around the vertebrae in the loin region. The data set was analyzed using a model that included body condition score, live weight of ewes, as well as other factors that affected productive traits. The results showed that the overall mean ewe BCS at lambing, ewe live weight, birth weight, weaning weight and daily live weight gain (from birth to weaning) were 2.9, 57.1 kg, 4.5 kg, 23.6 kg and 0.249 kg, respectively. As a result of the analyses, the relationship between body condition score and ewe lambing weight, birth weight and daily live weight gain of lamb were found to be 0.440, 0.301, and 0.219, respectively (P< 0.01; P> 0.05). The effect of ewe BCS was only significant (P< 0.01) effect on lamb birth weight. According to the results, BCS at the end of the gestation period should be at least 3.0-3.5 and also this condition should be maintained during the period of gestation in Kivircik ewes.Publication Estimation of breeding values and genetic trend of some growth traits in Merino sheep(Elsevier, 2022-06-03) Altınçekiç, Şeniz Öziş; Oral, Hülya Hanog; Duru, Serdar; ÖZİŞ ALTINÇEKİÇ, ŞENİZ; DURU, SERDAR; Ziraat Fakültesi; Zootekni Bölümü; 0000-0001-9044-8092; 0000-0001-5243-4458; I-9517-2017; AAG-8210-2021The aim of this study was to estimate the genetic trends for growth traits of Merino sheep managed under the National Sheep and Goat Improvement Project's breeding program. the analysis included data belonging to 3116 lambs born to 83 rams and 1129 ewes. The data [birth weight (BW), live weight at 45th day (LW45), weaning weight (WW-90th day) and average daily gain from birth to weaning (ADG)] were collected over a period of 6 years. BW demonstrated a positive and significant genetic correlation with all growth traits, but had a low direct heritability (0.02 +/- 0.02). Birth weight had high genetic correlation with all growth traits. Except for the high correlation between LW45 and WW (0.51), the remaining traits had medium or low phenotypic correlations. While the genetic trend values for LW45 in lambs, ADG, WW and growth index (GI) in rams and ADG, LW45 and GI in ewes were all positive, they were not statistically significant. However, the genetic progression for GI, WW and ADG in lambs were found to be negative and significant (p < 0.05). Genetic trend estimates indicated that there wasn't a positive genetic improvement in the growth traits studied in Merino sheep. For this purpose; T3 (triiodothyronine), T4 (thyroxine) and cortisol hormone levels of sheep in their blood samples were measured on day 1 when CIDR apparatus were mounted, on day 7 and on day 14 when they were removed. In this study, 80 head of ewes in total were used which consisted of 40 head Kivircik and 40 head Karacabey Merino ewes. 10 ml of blood from jugular veins of sheep were taken at the specified periods into EDTA tubes, and their T3, T4 and cortisol concentrations were identified by commercial RIA kits. In Kivircik race, these values were identified as 1.76 (ng/mL), 7.92 (mu g/dL), 5.30 (mu g/dL) respectively while in Karacabey Merino race as 1.69 (ng/mL), 7.00 (mu g/dL) and 4.19 (mu g/dL) respectively. In terms of T4 and cortisol, the difference between races were found significant (P<0.01) while difference between the periods were found significant only for T3 hormone (P<0.01).Publication Effects of non-genetic factors on growth traits and survival rate in Karacabey Merino lambs(Polska Akad Nauk, 2023-01-01) Oral, H. The study included data from a total of 17659 lambs and 12263 ewes raised in 30 herds between the years 2011 and 2016 as part of the National Sheep and Goat Improvement Project. The aver-age birth weight of the lambs was determined as 3.73 +/- 0.05 kg, the average 45th day live weight was 18.43 +/- 0.58 kg, the average weaning (average 91.8 days) weight was 31.83 +/- 0.24 kg, and the average daily live weight gain until weaning was 289.1 +/- 3.91 g. The average survival rate of lambs at weaning was calculated to be 95.67% +/- 1.15. The effects of the factors herd, birth year, birth type, birth season and sex were found significant for all traits (p<0.01). It was established that the mortality rate in lambs in large herds was higher during 6 years in which the project was carried out. Due to the high twinning rate in large herds, the number of lambs per worker is increased, and as a result, they cannot be adequately cared for. For this reason, large farms may be encouraged to increase workmanship services in addition to being provided with protective health practices for lambs throughout the birth period. On the other hand, it was determined that the twinning rate was low in small farms. On farms with fewer sheep populations, it may be advised to flush or administer exogenous hormone treatments to ewes in order to increase fertility and help them bear twins.Publication Effectiveness of genetic grouping with different strategies for estimation of genetic parameters in growth traits in merino lambs(Elsevier, 2022-10-07) Oral, Hülya Hanoğlu; DURU, SERDAR; Altıncekiç, Seniz Özis; ÖZİŞ ALTINÇEKİÇ, ŞENİZ; Ziraat Fakültesi; 0000-0001-5243-4458; 0000-0001-9044-8092; 0000-0003-3626-9637; JPL-0865-2023; I-9517-2017; AAG-8210-2021The effectiveness of genetic grouping in genetic evaluations for growth traits in Merino sheep was researched in this study. In the study, 17,537 lambs born to 48 rams and 7118 ewes in 30 flocks were evaluated in animal models using REML. A model without a genetic group (GG0) was used in the analysis, as well as a model with three different genetic groups (GG). Maternal genetic and common environmental effects are included in all models. However, the models with and without covariance between direct and maternal effect were used for each trait. The Akaike Information Criterion (AIC) was used to compare models, taking into account the accuracy and Pearson and Spearman correlations between 48 rams for breeding values. Direct heritability (h2d), maternal heritability (m2) and maternal common environmental effects (c2m) were generally found to be less than 0.10. The most important source of variation was found to be flock-year-season (FYS). It is worth bearing in mind that c2FYS has a very high share of phenotypic variance in all models, ranging from 0.07 +/- 0.01-0.43 +/- 0.03. The fact that there is such a wide environmental difference between enterprises in the same region is a major issue for the improvement programme. It is necessary to intensify studies on the one hand for the expansion of small busi-nesses and on the other hand for more modern animal husbandry to achieve this. AIC found that models based on GGs were better suited for all traits. Unlike AIC, the GG0 model had the highest accuracy for rams. The accuracy of the model (GG3), in which the mothers of animals whose father was unknown were also deleted and genetically grouped for both, was found to be lower for ADG and higher for WW. Furthermore, while the average accuracy for BW decreased to 0.60 in the other genetic group (GG1: lambs born in the same year in a flock and GG2: lambs born in a flock) models, it was found to be around 0.80 for ADG and above 0.80 for WW. According to research findings, it is possible to perform a genetic evaluation without losing data, especially in pedigrees with unknown fathers.Publication Determination of starting level of heat stress on daily milk yield in holstein cows in bursa city of Turkey(Atatürk Üniversitesi, 2018-01-01) Duru, Serdar; DURU, SERDAR; 0000-0001-5243-4458; I-9517-2017The aim of this study was to investigate the starting levels of heat stress on daily milk yield (DMY) in Holstein cows reared in Marmara region in Turkey. For this purpose, a total of 68113 daily milk records of 212 Holstein Friesian cows raised in Bursa, a city in Marmara region, during 2010-2012 were evaluated. The temperature humidity index (THI) was used to investigate the effect of heat stress. The effects of year, lactation number, days in milk (DIM) and THI on milk yield were found significant (P<0.01). DMY's smallest, largest, average values were 3.0, 72.1, 28.9 +/- 0.04, respectively, and the 305-day average milk yield was 9435 +/- 156.12 kg. DMY smallest adjusted average occurred in August (24.0 kg), while the highest occurred in April (31.5 kg). THI ranged between 26 and 79, the first THI value having adverse effect on milk yield was 65, and THI threshold value irreversibly affecting the milk yield is 70. THI value of 70 and above were detected more than 268 days from May to September in three years. The correlation coefficient between THI and the daily milk yield was calculated as -0.771. Also on farms in similar climatic conditions, precautions must be taken against heat stress. Continuous recording of temperature and humidity and the operation of the cooling system in the barns according to the THI can be more effective against heat stress.Publication Effects of flushing and various doses of β-carotene and vitamin e applications on the reproductive performance of ewes(South African Journal of Animal Sciences, 2022-01-01) Altınçekiç, Şenez Öziş; Koyuncu, Mehmet; Duru, Serdar; ÖZİŞ ALTINÇEKİÇ, ŞENİZ; KOYUNCU, MEHMET; DURU, SERDAR; Veteriner Fakültesi; Hayvancılık Bilimleri Bölümü; 0000-0001-9044-8092; 0000-0001-5243-4458; AAG-8210-2021; I-9517-2017; FFK-4918-2022The aim of this study was to determine whether fertility could be enhanced in Kivircik ewes during the anoestrous period by flushing or by administering an injectable (Ovostim) containing beta-Carotene and vitamin E. Three-year-old Kivircik ewes (n = 99) were used. The ewes were randomly divided into four groups: flushing, a single dose of Ovostim (5 ml/ewe) before the breeding season, a dose of Ovostim 10 days before the breeding season and a second dose at its start, and an untreated control. Results showed that pregnancy rate was higher in the treated groups than in the control (P <0.001). The single dose of Ovostim produced more multiple births (72%) and the highest litter size (1.64) compared with the other treatments. Although the double-dose of Ovostim influenced the ewes in the anoestrous period to the point of becoming pregnant, it failed to favourably affect the number of lambs born per ewe lambing. In conclusion, flushing the ewes or administering a single dose of Ovostim was shown to be advantageous in comparison with untreated ewes or those given two doses of Ovostim.
